Still, some Republicans opposed Santos' expulsion, including nearly all members of the GOP leadership, because he hasn’t been convicted of a crime.
Just five lawmakers have ever been removed from the House by an expulsion vote, and three of them fought against the union in the Civil War.
Though many railed against Santos for embarrassing the party and the chamber more broadly, Republicans could hardly afford to lose his vote.
“By voting yes to expulsion, Republicans and Democrats can stand for election integrity and against voter fraud because there is no more provable case of election fraud before this Congress than George Santos’ 2022 election fraud,” Rep. Nick LaLota, New York Republican, said on Thursday.
“New Yorkers from Queens and Nassau counties deserve better than George Santos – a total fraud and a serial liar representing them in Congress.”Still, Santos teased this week that he may not be finished with Congress.
